On the 23rd of July, 2024, Headfort Foundation for Justice held a crucial Stakeholders’ Dialogue in Lagos State which is focused on the enactment of the new state correction law. This dialogue marked a significant moment in our journey toward improving the correctional system in Lagos and across Nigeria.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representatives from the Lagos State judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Nigerian Police, and the Nigerian Bar Association. We were also joined by Civil Society Organizations, lawyers, the press, and engaged members of the public. Their collective presence underscored the importance of this legislative effort and the broad consensus on the need for reform.
The dialogue was characterized by robust discussions and a collaborative spirit. Participants shared invaluable insights and made thoughtful recommendations to the drafting committee. These contributions are crucial as we aim to craft a law that not only addresses the shortcomings of our current correctional system but also upholds human rights and promotes reformative justice rather than mere punishment.
The constructive nature of the discussions held and the engagement from all sectors involved highlight a collective dedication to meaningful reform. This collaborative effort is essential in shaping a correctional system that reflects our shared values and commitment to justice.
As we move forward, we remain committed to monitoring the progress of this legislative process. Our goal is to ensure that the final law respects human rights, fosters rehabilitation, and contributes positively to the correctional landscape in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
